Video: John Duff’s “Girly” is a Gay Boy’s Diva Fantasy

We don’t normally talk about music videos, but an exception needed to be made in this case. You’ve likely seen John Duff on the internet in some way, shape, or form in the last few years. He’s unapologetically himself: He gives no-nonsense advice, posts a well-executed thirst trap, and dances and sings his ass off. In the process, he’s normalizing many gay boys dreams’ of being a pop diva. Now, he literally plays the role of pop diva in the video for his debut single “Girly.”

Divas, Divas, Divas

Leading up to the release of ‘Girly’, John recreated iconic photos of Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, and Britney Spears. He made it no secret that he had something diva-related on the horizon.

It’s fairly safe to say that most gay boys who grew up in the 90’s re-enacted at least one of the iconic videos John Duff recreates in “Girly”. The music video for “Girly” is based on Mariah Carey’s iconic 1999 hit, “Heartbreaker”. John of course plays the role of Mariah, waist-cut jeans and all, while William and Mariah Balenciaga play his friends.

Throughout the video there are also homages to Madonna’s “Hung Up,” Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love,” Britney Spears’ “Stronger” and Christina Aguilera’s “Come On Over.” He executes every look and move flawlessly (not a surprise if you follow him on social media). Moreover, the villain Bianca (Mariah’s alter-ego introduced in “Heartbreaker”) is brilliantly portrayed by the singular Bianca Del Rio. The two even recreate “Heartbreaker”s iconic bathroom fight scene. “Girly” is an unashamed encouragement of body positivity and self-expression. We need more visuals like this in 2018 and beyond.
