Hello, Goodbye! TV’s renewals and cancellations

The biggest news of the week is perhaps the announcement that the next season of American Idol will be its last – but more on that here. However, there are other renewals – and cancellations – that deserve some discussion.

First, is my personal favorite show – Bones. The character driven crime drama centered around a forensic anthropologist, Temperance “Bones” Brennan, and her FBI agent husband, Seeley Booth, will see its 11th season on FOX. While this comes as a surprise to some (the show has received criticisms of redundancy as of late), to fans it is welcomed and expected news. Bones indeed has a loyal following, and while it may not have the best ratings anymore, it does well enough to sustain itself. Additionally, with Bones being newly with-child, it’d be an odd time to end such a longstanding series without the proper element of finality.

Also on FOX, the wildly successful break-out hit Empire will make its return – with an added bonus: the network ordered an additional 6 episodes to give the show a full season run, totaling 18 episodes – starting in the fall, ending in spring. Without a doubt, we should expect more celebrity guest spots on Empire (Mariah Carey is in talks with friend and show producer, director Lee Daniels) and even better writing (we hope)!

On ABC, two notable news series Fresh Off the Boat and Black-ish have been renewed alongside the modern-classic Modern Family. However, unfortunately, Cristela has been cancelled by the network much to the dismay of a legion of fans – dedicated both to the show and its star, Cristela Alonzo. Hopefully, the show can find a new home elsewhere, and if not, we hope to see Cristela find another exciting project. Meanwhile, fans of Shonda Rhymes can keep ruining our Thursday nights on social media: all three of her shows have been renewed.

In related news – ABC’s 90s hit, Full House, will make a comeback on Netflix with a new series called Fuller House, following the life of an adult D.J. and Kimmy. Most of the original stars of the show are expected to return in some way; rumor has it the Olsen twins, too!

And, while FOX cancelled Idol, fans of The Voice can rejoice – the hit singing competition starring an ever changing judging panel of hit-hungry pop stars will return on NBC for yet another entertaining but fruitless season of The Voice – which still has yet to produce any real superstar… or, average star, even. Meanwhile, Law & Order: SVU returns for an umpteenth season which makes one wonder how anyone can question Bones getting an eleventh. However, to be fair, FOX has more hit shows in comparison to NBC’s rather bleak lineup.

Finally, CBS remains as elusive as our favorite chanteuse in delivering news on all its shows. However, the most important news is already in: The Big Bang Theory, starring Roseanne alum Johnny Galecki and the hilarious Jim Parsons, will return for two more seasons, (at least).

We’ll be sure to update with any other noteworthy developments!
