Single Review: “Baby Don’t Lie” by Gwen Stefani

The new single from the leading lady of No Doubt has dropped today.

For her comeback to the music scene as a soloist, Gwen Stefani enlisted Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco and Noel Zancanella to create a midtempo Pop number that, surprisingly, feels subpar.

“Baby Don’t Lie” starts with a promising beat breakdown, then evolves into an Electronic interlude, only to finally leave space to a tropical-ish beat and a synthy chorus. Gwen’s vocals sound pitched down and overly processed, to the point where she almost sounds like she’s Shakira’s cousin.

It’s certainly catchy enough to draw the initial interest of listeners and radio, but it’s not popping enough as the comeback many were hoping for. Not from the same woman who completely rocked songs such as “What You wating For?” and “Hollaback Girl.”

A clip of the music video will be unveiled, ahead of its Tuesday full VEVO premiere, tonight on The Voice where Gwen is one of the judges for this season.
