I’m in love with a boy band, too!

Everybody groove to the music, everybody jam.

That one verse is where it all began. On September 5th, 1995 pop culture was introduced to these five cute teen sensations when the Backstreet Boys released their first single “We’ve Got It Going On.” A song that, 20 years later, is considered one of their most iconic songs.

Their self titled album Backstreet Boys was released August 12th, 1997 in the US. Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter took the ’90’s by storm. When you listen to their first album, it takes you back in time.

I was 5 years old when I first heard “We’ve Got It Going On” and specifically remember having it on repeat. I instantly fell in love (especially with AJ). For the past 20 years I’ve been a fan of The Backstreet Boys. Some call it an obsession, I call it an appreciation.

They were my first cassette tape, my first CD, my first poster and my first concert. I’ve seen them 16 times in concert throughout my life. I’ve met them all twice accidentally on the streets In New York City. I’ve had conversations for hours with the men I’ve only dreamed of meeting since I was five. I can’t even tell you the amount of money I’ve spent but not because I obsess over them. It’s because every time I see those five men I flashback to the little girl screaming along to the songs that I still smile at these days.

In 1997 the music industry was becoming this pop era, bigger than before. You had boy bands with fans fighting each other for who is better. You had rock music that was better than anything you’ll hear these days (except The Foo Fighters). And you had my personal favorite, the girls who survived while paying them bills bills bills and being bootylicious all at the same time, Destiny’s Child.  For kids in the 90’s, it was the best era for music. You had choices, influences and inspirations.

August 12th, 2014 marks 17 years since the Backstreet Boys released their debut album, and I can say that my love for music was influenced highly because of them. Thinking of hearing that first verse of their very first song gives me chills and puts a smile on my face, like I am 5 years old again.

Since 1997 the boys have released eight albums and are working on their 9th album. Eight albums, 20 years, five men and millions of fans that are thankful and grateful for the day they entered the music industry.

They are a timeless group, and truly one of a kind. The love they have for their fans is unlike any other and there is no stopping them. The have changed the music industry and will continue to until the end.
